History

Vita is located at 256 Columbus Avenue in downtown Sandusky, part of the historic footprint of the original Kingsbury Block, one of the city’s most important 19th-century commercial developments.

The Beginning

The Kingsbury Block was first developed in the 1890s after a long legal dispute over the property brought it under the ownership of the Kingsbury family estate. It quickly became a thriving professional hub, home to doctors, attorneys, dentists, and insurance offices in the heart of downtown Sandusky.

The Commercial Banking & Trust Building (1924)

In the early 1920s, the Commercial National Bank acquired the site and redeveloped part of the Kingsbury Block into its new headquarters. The project required partial demolition of the original structure and resulted in the construction of a new Commercial Banking & Trust Company building, completed in 1924.

Designed in a refined Italian Renaissance style, the building was constructed as a major downtown financial institution and served as one of Sandusky’s premier banking addresses. While it appears as a two-story structure from Columbus Avenue, the building actually contains multiple interior levels.

A Building Through Time

After the bank’s closure during the Great Depression, the building continued to serve the community in new ways:

  • Western Security Bank operated here from 1933 into the 1970s

  • Calvary Temple used the space as a church from 1975 to 2015

  • The City of Sandusky later utilized portions of the building for administrative offices and planning

Through each era, the structure remained a central part of downtown civic and community life.

Vita Today

Today, the building has been thoughtfully reimagined as Vita: a multi-experience gathering place featuring coffee, dining, bar service, and events.

Original architectural elements remain woven throughout the space, including the preserved bank vault, now used as the private meeting room, connecting the building’s financial past to its new role as a place of gathering, hospitality, and community.
